Argus Panoptes

Argus Panoptes is a figure in Greek mythology known as the hundred-eyed giant.

'Argus' means 'bright' or 'shining' in Greek, while 'Panoptes' means 'all-seeing' or 'one who sees everything'.

Argus was said to have been endowed with a hundred eyes by the goddess Hera as a way to keep watch over the nymph Io.

Io was a maiden who caught the attention of Zeus, the king of gods. Hera, Zeus' wife, suspected Zeus' infidelity and transformed Io into a heifer. Argus was tasked with watching over her to ensure she didn't escape.

Each of Argus' eyes took turns sleeping, meaning he could always stay vigilant and watchful. The eyes were also said to see everything, making him an all-seeing entity.

Hermes, the messenger of the gods, is sent by Zeus to slay Argus. Hermes lulls Argus to sleep with his music and then beheads him.

Hera, in tribute to Argus' service, places his eyes on the tail feathers of her favorite bird, the peacock. This is why the peacock's tail feathers are considered so beautiful and are known for their distinctive patterned eyespots.

In addition to his role in guarding Io, Argus is also involved in various other mythological tales, such as the quest of Jason and the Argonauts, where he is defeated by Medea's magic.

Argus Panoptes is often depicted as a giant with multiple pairs of eyes covering his body. His portrayal in art and literature maintains his image as the all-seeing guardian.

The concept of the 'panopticon,' a prison design proposed by Jeremy Bentham in the 18th century, draws inspiration from Argus Panoptes. It aims to create a structure where inmates can be constantly observed without them knowing if they are being watched at any given time.
